Here's some true leadership for you. Jeb Bush, speaking at a South Carolina town hall meeting, gave his reaction to the tragedy in Oregon yesterday and the call for action on gun safety. Here it is, in the context it was given, and with all the force of a limp rag.
"Look, stuff happens," Bush said. "There's always a crisis and the impulse is always to do something. It's not necessarily the right thing to do."
Shrug. That's the extent of it. Stuff happens. Stuff always happens.
Thinking it was a mistake, reporters followed up on it in the press gaggle after the town hall, where he said, "I said what I said."
How brave of him. How bold. How compassionate.
When President Obama was questioned by Jon Karl about Jeb's response, he was succinct, too. "I don't even think I need to react to that one," he replied.
After noting how often mass shootings happen, he said, "People can decide whether they consider that stuff happening."
