Donald Trump has failed his John McCain Moment test.
During a town hall meeting televised by MSNBC (!!!) this afternoon, Donald Trump was faced with an irate supporter who first claimed President Obama is a Muslim and then questioned Trump about "when we could get rid of them?"
First, he asked those in attendance to make their questions "vicious, violent, terrible."
They complied. Then this happened.
Via CNN:
"We have a problem in this country. It's called Muslims," said the unidentified man who spoke at a question-and-answer town hall event in Rochester, New Hampshire. "You know our current president is one. You know he's not even an American."
A seemingly bewildered Trump interrupted the man, chuckling, "We need this question? This is the first question?"
"Anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us," the man, wearing a "Trump" T-shirt, continued. "That's my question: When can we get rid of them?"
"We're going to be looking at a lot of different things," Trump replied. "You know, a lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening. We're going to be looking at that and many other things."
The audience response:
Another man stood up in the crowd and said he wanted to “applaud the gentleman who stood and said Obama is a Muslim born abroad.”
Trump’s response?
“Right,” he said.
That's a profile in cowardice right there. That's bad enough, but Trump's statement to the Washington Postwas even worse.
So conflating Muslims with imaginary Christian persecution?
Imagine if that person had substituted the word "Jews" for Muslims.
