Steve Doocy asks if the increase in gun permits caused the decrease in homicides and robberies in Detroit. Apparently, a gun-enthusiastic James Craig, the Chief of Police in Detroit seems to think that that is specifically the reason for the drop in crime.
Craig is a transplant from another state with much different demographics. Police Chief Craig:
'You know, my time in Maine was a pivotal part for my taking another look at the effect of what good Americans who are armed can have on reducing violence. The State of Maine has a motto: The way life should be.'
He touts his arrival in 2013 which helped encourage the fed-up community to acquire more guns. But he neglects to mention that the economy of Detroit hit its absolute nadir in 2012 when violence was at its peak. The fact that more guns were registered the next year has nothing to do with the drop in violent crime.
Craig cites a Wright and Rossi survey that was conducted in 1982 and 1983. Way to be current, Chief Ammosexual! His takeaway from the over 30 year old study was that 57% of felons surveyed feared an armed citizen more than the cops. But were the cops three decades ago the militarized force they are today? I doubt it. Reagan was just getting started with his policy of trading cocaine for arms and wheeling and dealing with Central America, Iran and Iraq. He also made a concerted effort to get more crack on the streets in places just like Detroit. Things were a bit different back then.
He thinks his police department is doing great work, but he believes it's helpful to put more guns in the hands of citizens. I wonder who paid him to say that? Just maybe, was it his appearance on the cover of
The National Rifle Association's "America's 1st Freedom" magazine.(?) The article, titled "A Show of Courage in Detroit," includes a Q&A with Craig, who said he never expected to create a "big stir" with his comments.
There are more scientific studies that prove that more guns equals higher rates of gun fatalities and injuries to even list, that disprove this sellout's erroneous theory, like this one. But the crowd that goes to Steve Doocy to become more 'informed' want to hear news like this, so why not give the people what they want?
