Remember how Fox News attacked Obama for “politicizing” the Charleston tragedy? That was so gun control ago! In the wake of the horrible murder of a San Francisco woman by a criminal immigrant who had been deported five times, Fox & Friends hosts jumped at the chance to make Donald Trump a hero for his nativist, Mexican-bashing comments that have gotten him in quite a bit of hot water.
You may recall that when President Obama said the Charleston shooting underscored the easy availability of guns, Fox News attacked him for exploiting a tragedy. “It’s almost like a sickness,” with liberals, Sean Hannity sneered. “Tragedy happens: ‘Let’s see how we can advance our narrative.’”
I’ll bet that Hannity won’t be attacking Fox & Friends for using the shocking slaying of 32-year old Kathryn Steinle on a San Francisco pier to validate Donald Trump’s smears of Mexican immigrants. No, Hannity is more likely to echo his colleagues. He has already declared "Donald Trump is right!"
On Saturday’s Fox & Friends, cohost Clayton Morris used the tragedy to affirm Trump in a Fox News “question.”
MORRIS: Yesterday, what unfolded in San Francisco was tragic and you were speaking out about this. What happened in San Francisco yesterday sort of underlines what you’ve been saying all week. An illegal immigrant allegedly has shot and killed a woman, 32 years old, at the Embarcadero down there in San Francisco, a very popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. …She was shot in broad daylight. …The man who shot her was an illegal immigrant, allegedly. He’s been deported five times and seven felony convictions. He says he was just down there with an illegal handgun, shooting at seals. What do you think about this?
Trump didn’t need any more prodding.
TRUMP: Well, I think it’s so sad. An incredible young woman, shot right in front of her father. Her father was standing there, watching. …And we have many cases like this. You know, nobody wants to talk about it. It seems like I’m sort of a whipping post because I bring it up and I don’t understand – whether you’re liberal, whether you’re conservative, whether you’re Republican, Democrat, why wouldn’t you talk about a problem – there’s tremendous crime and it’s the – illegal immigration is just incredible and you talk about terrorism and the terrorists – they’re going to come in from the southern border, too, because it’s the easiest thing. You just walk right in.
…The crime is raging, it’s raging and it’s violent and people don’t want to even talk about it and if you talk about it, you’re a racist. I don’t understand it.
Even worse, near the end, cohost Elizabeth Prann played a clip from a previous interview with a man named Jamiel Shaw, “whose son was murdered by an illegal immigrant and says that you’re absolutely right,” as Prann put it.
SHAW: Everyone’s illegal alien lovers right now, you know. That’s what Donald Trump was talking about, you know, and they called him a liar but I’m here to prove there’s thousands of people who’ve been murdered by illegal aliens and raped, and child molesters and drunk drivers. So Donald Trump was right on. …Donald Trump is speaking for us, speaking for our dead.
Prann gushed, “So Donald Trump, you say you’re taking a loss but if you listen to that you certainly may be gaining supporters as well.”
