On the day that Donald Trump announced his presidential candidacy, Fox’s Neil Cavuto hosted rival Rick Perry and suggested his “enviable track record” on the economy “would even impress The Donald.” Not mentioned were the significant downsides of Perry’s record.
Cavuto declared to Perry, “1.5 million jobs created out there, I think that would even impress the Donald.” Cavuto later kissed up by saying, “You do have an enviable track record when you’re talking about creating jobs.”
When asked how he’d handle a bad economy, Perry read from the conservative playbook. “You start right off the bat and you open up the XL pipeline. …You drive down that corporate tax rate to send a message that we’re going to be giving incentives to manufacturers to come back,” Perry said. He predicted that would "an incredibly bright future with a manufacturing renaissance like we’ve never seen.”
Perry boasted, “Nobody (else) can say that during the most powerful recession since the Great Recession (sic), Texas created 1.5 million jobs. It didn’t happen by accident, it was because we put policies, tax policies, regulatory policies into place. Nobody (else) is going to be able to stand on the stage and say, ‘You know what? All of that in the same package, and he’s also worn the uniform of the country.’”
Cavuto sounded impressed. “Governor, I think that’s what they call a slap back,” he said.
Perry closed by saying, “Neil, it’s good to be with you, brother, Godspeed.”
But what Cavuto didn’t mention is what the New York Times called “the dark underside of the Texas Miracle," i.e., “low-wage jobs, failing public schools and legions of citizens who remain below the poverty line and without health insurance.” The Times also noted that California has thrived under its Democratic governor Jerry Brown, with “high taxes, strict regulations, broader access to health care and a push to raise the minimum wage in several cities.” But Cavuto didn’t mention that, either.
