So we woke up to a horrible story:

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- An intense manhunt was under way Thursday for a white gunman who opened fire on Wednesday night at a historic black church in this city’s downtown, killing nine people before fleeing.

The police chief, Greg Mullen, called the shooting a hate crime.

I have to say I'm surprised to see this as the lead item at FoxNews.comand Fox Nation. Fox has had a habit of downplaying stories that don't fit the Fox narrative. You'd think a brutal hate crime at a black church would be hard to explain according to the Fox worldview.

But I'm looking at the comments in the Fox Nation thread, and it's clear that the folks in the Fox audience know exactly how to square this story with what they think they know -- they've absorbed years of propaganda from Fox and other right-wing media outlets, and they've learned how to fit everything into the same old templates (and a couple of new ones). Expect to see these memes reinforced by Fox on-air talent in the next few days:

Prayer's to all.Now SC you better watch out AL show me the money lying fraud Sharpton ,is headed your way.

Strange no mention of the 16 year old shot last night in SE Washington DC, hum I wonder why?

****

Are we sure they were black, or did they just check the box?

****

they "identified" as being black

****

Obama and his criminals should be happy this morning--this is what a divide America along racial, religious and economic lines create.

****

seems Hope and Change is really Hate and Division

****

Going to be a riot in Charleston - look out liquor stores and cell phone stores and electronic stores.

****

There will be no riots in Charleston. Have you not noticed riots only occur in liberal cities?

****

Now when Muslims do this to Christians all over the globe, this administration can't even call them Islamic terrorist, but here it is a" hate crime " No worries Reverend Al will come and stir up the community and of course someone will "keep the course" and go shoot some white people to make him feel better.

****

maybe Al Painted himself white

****

Let's just imagine this was Israel and those church victims were Jews in a Synagogue.. Would Obama's MSM cover it the same way?

****

no MSN would would be intervieweing some Sheep Dipper in Gaza blaming it on the jews

****

There's a lot of hatred on both sides of the racial coin and most of was stoked by our liberal leaders for their political gain.

****

was it racism when those black thugs tortured and killed that white family?.....well, Liberals??

****

You'll not see me arguing to violate the 2nd Amendment. I wish the Congregation had been armed.

****

The shooter was gay and was after his black ex boy friend.

So, to sum up, the real villains here are Al Sharpton, Al Sharpton, Al Sharpton, Rachel Dolezal, the racist (and anti-Semitic) president and liberal media, legislators who turn churches into gun-free zones, and, of course, gay people.

Nothing will ever change these people's minds. There just have to be a lot more of us than there are of them, and we need to recognize that they're not just our nice neighbors who happen to have a few odd opinions on the news -- they just hate everyone who's not like themselves and who doesn't think the way they do, and nothing will ever change that.

UPDATE; In comments, Professor Chaos writes:

Surprised they haven't cast this as part of the "War on Christianity."

In fact, on Fox & Friends, commentator E.W. Jackson (who got 45% of the vote as the GOP's candidate for lieutenant governor in 2013) said precisely that. He also called on church members (but only the men) to carry firearms in church. (Via Joe. My. God.)

JACKSON ... I am deeply concerned that this gunman chose to go into a church, because there does seem to be a rising hostility against Christians across this country because of our biblical views. And I just think it's something that we have to be aware of, and not create an atmosphere in which people take out their violent intentions against Christians.

And I would mention one other thing very quickly, and that is, I would urge pastors and men in these churches to prepare to defend themselves. It's sad, but I think we've got to arm ourselves -- at least have some people in the church who are prepared to defend the church when women and children are attacked.

Can you help us out?
