Chris Wallace grilled Mike Huckabee this Sunday, among other things, about his claim that a president does not need to abide by a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. But there was one controversy Wallace did not grill Huckabee about: his staunch support for the conservative Duggar family in the face of revelations that son Joshua molested young girls, including his sisters.
I’ve previously reported how Mike Huckabee took to Facebook to affirm his support for the reality TV stars:
Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family. Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things.
In the same post, Huckabee also lashed out at the “bloodthirsty media” for having “enjoyed revealing this long ago sins (sic) in order to discredit the Duggar family.”
It turns out Huckabee has ties to Judge Stacey Zimmerman who mysteriously expunged the police report about Joshua Duggar’s sexual offenses. From a May 23 USA Today article (emphasis mine):
Springdale Police spokesman Scott Lewis told the Associated Press that Judge Stacey Zimmerman ordered the 2006 offense report destroyed Thursday. Zimmerman didn’t return a request for comment on Friday.
“The judge ordered us yesterday to expunge that record,” Lewis said, adding that similar records are typically kept indefinitely. “As far as the Springdale Police Department is concerned this report doesn’t exist.”
According to Judge Zimmerman’s campaign website, she was appointed to two different positions by Huckabee: the Criminal Detention Facility Review Committee, 1995-1998, and the Arkansas Coalition for Juvenile Justice, 1999-2005.
Yesterday, Wallace peppered Huckabee for 14 minutes with the kind of questioning that Fox normally reserves for Democrats. Well, except for the opening question that invited Huckabee to attack Hillary Clinton.
WALLACE: I want to start with a couple of breaking stories. First of all, the release on Friday by the State Department of 296 of Hillary Clinton's emails concerning Benghazi.
Here's the reaction that you gave: "We expect these charades and masquerades in USSR," that's the old Soviet Union, "not the US."
Governor, explain what you mean by that.
Among other subjects, Huckabee got the third degree about his stance on the Patriot Act, the flat tax and Social Security. But Wallace reserved his most stringent questioning about Huckabee’s threat to disregard the Supreme Court, in favor of a “Supreme Being,” on gay marriage. But the gay-marriage hating Duggars? Nothing.
