Ben Carson made himself look like a fool again today when he said on CNN Wednesday morning that the gay lifestyle was a choice and he proved it by using "prison sex" as his template.
Carson: Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight -- and when they come out, they're gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question
After the entire blogosphere lit up over his ridiculous remarks he then went on Sean Hannity's propaganda radio show and whined to Sean about the liberal media for taking him out of context:
Ben Carson was on with Sean Hannity this afternoon and was asked about his interview with CNN this morning. Carson responded by reiterating his support for traditional marriage between a man and woman, adding that he believes our Constitution protects everyone, regardless of their beliefs, and that includes people who are gay. He says that he has no problem with people who are gay doing whatever they want, but he’s not willing to redefine marriage for them.
With regard to the CNN interview itself, Carson says they pre-recorded a 25 minute interview and that all they are playing is that one tidbit about gay rights. Because of that, Carson says he’s decided he’s not going to talk about ‘gay rights’ anymore, noting that every time he has momentum, the liberal press wants to talk about it. He said he’s just not going to fall for that again.
This is a load of crap, but the Fox News folks will lap this up. The gay marriage questions was at the end of the interview, but he was asked about a few other topics including how he would fight ISIS, so he's lying right off the bat.
Andrew Kirell at Mediaite writes:
The problem with Carson’s attempt to play victim here is that, during that sequence of the CNN interview, there were clearly no jump-cuts and no edits — just a straight back-and-forth about whether homosexuality is a choice. Playing this off with a “gotcha media vs. poor ol’ Ben Carson” spin isn’t exactly going to cut it. Sometimes your words are just your words.
In my post, I asked where he got his information from and apparently he pulled it out of his ass.
Politifact rated his conclusions as "false"
There is no research that supports this point. The one study that even begins to address the topic has too small a sample size -- and too many variables -- to shed light on Carson's claim. And its author finds Carson's view "simplistic."
Further, Carson used this example to prove that sexual orientation is a personal decision. Respected scientists consider it settled that homosexuality is not a matter of choice. Additionally, experts told us the sex culture in prison is not comparable to sex culture outside of prison, making it a bad analogy.
We rate Carson’s claim False.
The Washington Post asked some experts and their conclusions mirrored Politifact.
"The fundamental assumption of the analogy he's using is insane," said Helen Eigenberg, professor of criminal justice at the University of Tennessee, who has been studying sexuality and incarceration for about 25 years. "I don't know of any research that substantiates the [claim] that men go to prison and come out gay. There's no data to support that claim," she said.
