Fox News has a segment called the Trouble With Schools which ironically elucidates stories that show increased diversity and tolerance in academia -- which conservatives just abhor. They find stories that actually highlight academic matters they find objectionable, which makes for some entertaining Faux News outrage. Today's controversy: Arizona State University is offering a course entitled, Eng. 401 “Studies in American Literature/Culture: U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness.”
Who brought this travesty to the attention of the white warriors at Fox News? None other than a student who's a proud member of CampusReform.org, a young Republican group that idolizes Ronnie Ray-gun. They are fond of organizations like The Drudge Report, The Blaze and Fox News. Lauren Clark was incensed at a course that might suggest white people are accountable for race issues in society. I have family at ASU and I think this would be a very interesting topic to explore.
Here's a typical tweet from the sanctimonious Christian, "proud Country Girl", replete with poor spelling and fervent Israeli jingoism.

In case you're not sure if this class will outrage the white supremacists in the Republican party, take a look at the US Herald, a publication that has views that are to the right of Hitler. Another clue: one of their stories from January 13, 2015 was called, Obama Praises Koran, Attacks Bible in New Video This particular story evoked the typical loathing of the 'socialism' of the Obama Administration, which is a problem if you're a paranoid Republican. 
The indoctrination of white guilt doesn’t just harm white people into feeling guilty for something they had no part of, it also breeds a sense of entitlement from other communities. The African-American community for example is full of people who feel like they’re owed something because of the color of their skin, because white people did their ancestors wrong (and again, this requires people to ignore that white people weren’t the only ones involved in the slave trade, and also ignore the fact that many white people didn’t have families involved in the slave trade).
Instead of telling people they should be guilty for what someone else did 150 plus years ago, perhaps universities should start teaching their students about what happened in the past that could help make the future better. For example, they could teach, without any bias, how socialism is a failed concept that will never work because eventually all of the money runs out.
If that doesn't get the folks with the white hoods and sheets out in the streets, what will? Lauren is just appalled. She writes,
According to the class description on ASU’s website, students will be reading The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, Critical Race Theory, Everyday Language of White Racism, Playing in the Dark, and The Alchemy of Race and Rights
The course, first reported by the Pundit Press, is taught by Lee Bebout, an assistant professor of English at ASU. According to his faculty page, critical race theory is one of his research interests. Bebout, who is white, has previously taught classes titled “Transborder Chicano Literature,” “Adv Studies Theory/Criticism,” and “American Ethnic Literature,” among others.
They were unable to reach Bebout, but I can't imagine he agrees with Fox News' assessment of his course. I'm sure this isn't the last we'll hear of this "controversy."
