Real Time's Bill Maher took aim at everyone who couldn't be bothered to make it to the polls and the various excuses we heard for not voting during his New Rules segment this Friday.
MAHER: And finally, New Rule, instead of giving an I Voted sticker to the people who did vote, let's make the people who didn't vote wear one that says “I couldn't be bothered.” And then let's quit patting ourselves on the back for doing something we're supposed to do anyway.
I voted. It's like wearing a sticker that says I feed my dog, I flush after using the toilet, I keep my clothes on at the playground.
After discussing the fact that he supports getting rid of voter suppression and and the many laws we've seen Republicans passing every hear to make it harder to vote, Maher reminded his viewers about how we turn back those laws... by voting.
Maher also took on Russell Brand for his new book.
MAHER: Russell Brand is in the news. He's a funny guy. But he just wrote a book that's more laughable where he tells young people not to vote because the system is so awful and so dirty that the only solution if to bring it down... not by violence, but not by voting either. No, by some sort of spiritual awakening. Oh for fuck's sake, fine. You know what? Don't vote. But don't dress it up as something noble or sophisticated. The fake excuses offend me.
Like, politicians, they're all the same. No, you're thinking of The Lord of the Rings movie. Or, it doesn't matter who wins. Well, in Florida last Tuesday, the Democrat lost the race for governor by 66 thousand votes and if he'd won, 700 thousand poor Floridians would have gotten health insurance under the Obamacare Medicaid expansion that Republican governors blocked. So, it would have mattered to them.
Maher went onto ask why voters can't be bothered to show up if the candidates don't somehow manage to “excite their base” and reminded us of what our country would be like had we elected either John McCain or Mitt Romney.
To illustrate his point, Maher just merged the two into one character, Mitt McCain and reminded everyone what things would be like with either of them in charge.
