Oh, San Diego, how you do manage to embarrass California. As if racial profiling isn't bad enough when law enforcement does it, now your staffers are using it to identify potential campaign trackers?
TPM reports that GOP candidate Carl DeMaio's chief of staff had a checklist of traits that scream campaign tracker. Are they young? Check. Are they black? Check. Are they talkative to campaign staff? Check. Are they attending a Saturday morning event? Check.
The red flag goes up. Campaign tracker. Because God forbid any young, black, inquisitive person would ever be interested in voting for a Republican anyway, right? (That's sarcasm, in case anyone wants to get crazed over what they might think is a gross generalization.)
According to the original report, DeMaio responded to a reporter's question about it by saying they could drop the "black" criterion from the list and he'd agree.
How is this not racial profiling? Rather insulting racial profiling, too, given the assumption that every young person of color must be a Democrat. We'd like to think most are, but there's nothing on their birth certificate guaranteeing it.
Maybe Democrats should start sending middle-aged women to Republican events instead.
