Here's a perfect example of where a Body Cam told the tale of what really happened when Christopher Mitchell came out of his house brandishing a gun.
Police shot Christopher Mitchell, 37, outside his home after officers said he pointed a gun at them.
Deputy Chief Paul Humphries said investigators learned later that Mitchell had been drinking and had earlier pointed a gun at a friend who came to talk to him.
The friend told police that at one point, Mitchell put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but it didn't fire, so he discarded it.
Mitchell obtained another gun from his home, then came outside to confront officers when they arrived, Humphries said.
"When he came out onto the porch, he had the gun to his head, he continued down, pulled the gun down below, from his head, lowered it and actually racked the action, putting another shell in the chamber. When he did that, he brought the gun up to bear on the officers, that's when they made the decision to fire," Humphries said.
Humphries said Mitchell first put the .22-caliber handgun to his head, then chambered a round and pointed it at officers.
Sgt. Robert Lind, a nine-year veteran, and Officer Scott McManis, a 20-year veteran, fired on Mitchell, killing him.
Neither of the cops who shot Mitchell were wearing a body camera. But a policeman from a neighboring precinct also responded, and he was wearing one, leaving no doubt that the account as related by the police was accurate.
