The Republican Party's first Tea Party-backed House Majority Whip refused to say that his party would not try to impeachment President Barack Obama if he moves not to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
The Los Angeles Times reported last week that the president was preparing to take executive action to protect about half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants from being deported.
During a Sunday interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace asked House Majority White Steve Scalise (R-LA) what the Republicans were willing to do to stop the president.
"This may be the first White House in history that is trying to start the narrative of impeachment," Scalise opined. "Ultimately, what we want to see the president do is follow the laws. The president took and oath to faithfully execute the laws of this land, and he's not."
"But impeachment is off the table?" Wallace pressed.
"Well, the White House wants to talk about impeachment," Scalise replied, dodging the question. "Ironically, they're going out and trying to fundraise off of that too."
"I'm asking you, sir," Wallace asked again.
"Look, the White House will do anything they can to change the topic away from the president's failed agenda," the Louisiana Republican insisted. "People are paying a higher cost for food, for health care, for gas at the pump. And the president isn't solving those problems. So, he wants to try to change the subject."
