TRENTON — Records suggest the Port Authority's $235 million purchase of a piece of land in Bayonne four years ago was done so Gov. Chris Christie could shift a financial dilemma facing the state onto the bistate agency and avoid hurting his image as a fiscal conservative, according to a report by The New York Times.
The agency — led by officials appointed by Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo — bought the 131-acre former Military Ocean Terminal site in 2010, saying it would allow the region's port facilities to grow. Christie said it would lead to more jobs, as well.
