Traditionally, a concerto is a type of musical work in which a solo instrument is supported by an orchestral accompaniment. If you look at this piece from that perspective, it would be a symphony; however, Bartók postulates that it is, in fact, a concerto, as each section of the orchestra is treated in such a way that presents them as virtuosic solo instruments. So, there you have it, your musicology lesson for the evening. Now you can kick back and enjoy the beauty and complexity of Bartók's composition.
