Seems like the GOP realizes that the more the populace gets to know their candidates, the less there is to support in them. So rather than get better candidates, the answer is to reduce the candidates' visibility to potential voters.
Did Extremist Candidates Force GOP To Cut GOP Presidential Debates In 2016?
March 15, 2014

(Rick Perry forgets which agencies he would eliminate)

During the fight for the Republican nomination for president in 2012, the GOP field was exposed as the most right wing, extremist party this country has seen in many a moon. It was such a source of entertainment for those of us covering the events (Twitter was ablaze with laughter) that I'm very disappointed in these proposed changes. The party elders were so embarrassed that they are forcing the RNC to impose changes to their format to protect themselves from the utter humiliation of it all. Not only are they proposing to cut down the number of debates from 27 to ten or fewer and pick their own moderators, but they also want to move up their national convention to a much earlier date.

Planned changes to the Republican Party's presidential selection process are part of a rebuilding process that will strengthen the GOP brand and hopefully make its presidential nominee more competitive in 2016, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told California Republicans on Friday, calling the GOP's current primary process "a complete disaster."

Priebus said shortening the primary process by moving up the national convention at which the nominee is typically selected to June and cutting the number of debates are "not an establishment takeover. This is using your brain. Everything's not a conspiracy."

"I think a traveling circus of debates is insanity in this party," Priebus told about 200 delegates. "We're proposing to have fewer than 10, and this time around, we're going to pick the moderators."

Priebus is proposing to hold just 10 debates for the would-be GOP nominees in 2016, compared with the 27 held ahead of the 2012 race in which former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was eventually selected as the party's nominee.

I agree with Priebus that the GOP presidential primary is a traveling circus, but it's one I want my cable TV tickets for.

I hope all the networks balk at letting them pick their own moderators because it would turn into an infomercial. I imagine Fox News will accommodate them as much as possible, but even Roger Ailes will not like Priebus telling him who they can use.

By the way, it's not only the candidates that were a joke, it's their audiences as well
