In 1966, psychologist Abraham Maslow published a book called “The Psychology of Science.” While the book itself isn’t the most well-known, one observation drawn from it is. Today, we call it “Maslow’s Hammer,” or the “Law of the Instrument.” The Law of the Instrument is generally summed up as “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” We’d like to offer a postulate of that law that we’re calling “The Conservative’s Hammer.” To wit: “If all of your opportunities arise from death, horror and fear, then every incidence of death, horror and fear looks like an opportunity ...
