Snarky Puppy is one of those bands that goes in my "better-live-than-in-studio" category. Don't get me wrong, their recordings sound great, but you just can't replicate the energy that they bring to the stage. They originated in Denton, Texas, and you know what that means: University of North Texas music students. Along with state-of-the-art facilities, UNT is known for its music program, especially its emphasis on jazz. Not all of them were part of the program, mind you, but it sure didn't hurt to have a few of them in the line up, which has seen over 40 members. In that sense, I guess you could say that Snarky Puppy is more of a metamorphic collective with a few consistent musicians at its core. But, because they work with so many talented musicians and are constantly changing their approach to performing, they have become a far more mature and progressive force in music.

Got any favorite music collectives?
