Storms Plunge NJ Blood Bank To 'Emergency' Level

New Jersey's supply of blood is dipping precariously low because of one-day storms that have forced the cancellation of dozens of blood drives.

The shortage of platelets is especially worrisome, blood bank officials say, because they have a shelf life of just five days and must be constantly replenished by blood drives.

And to make matters worse, the disruption of air travel means the metropolitan area can't get timely supplies from blood banks elsewhere. Instead, workers have been driving as far as Baltimore to replenish the stock of platelets, according to Marie Forrestal, director of don...
