I just can't wrap my head around this:

Copenhagen Zoo said it euthanized the male, named Marius, on Sunday because of a duty to avoid inbreeding.

After an autopsy, "Marius" was dismembered in front of a zoo audience that included children, and fed to the zoo's lions.

Despite online uproar over the move and reports of last-minute attempts to save the animal, the zoo in the Danish capital said it had no place for Marius in its giraffe herd.

Okay, I get that in the drive to protect the species and create thriving lines that will carry on for generations that zoos want to avoid inbreeding, but then just give the giraffe to another zoo who doesn't carry that same family line. Or have we now got to the point where there is a singular family line in all the zoos worldwide?

And don't even get me started on dismembering the giraffe in front of children and feeding it to the lions. Yes, that is the "law of the jungle" ("law of the savannah"?) but that's just horrifying, no matter how much zoo officials deny it.
