Not only does it convey a sense of catharsis, but it adds just a final bit of development within the music's storyline. It shows us that, regardless of the main character's fate, something was learned after the treacherous musical journey that spanned four sides of vinyl. This is mirrored in the music, considering that the piece comes after a double album's-worth of pounding, delayed guitars and manic vocals, it seems appropriate for the final tune to be a light relief to act as a foil to the treacherous path it left behind. Clarinet, harmonium, a children's choir, and Roger Waters' warm spoken word lulls the album into its conclusion, providing the listener with a much-needed sense of relief after such an intense musical experience.
