One of the things I loved about running an international record company is that it was my duty to travel all over the world and meet the folks in our foreign affiliates. No one else wanted to do it either-- except London. After having spent years living abroad, I finally figured out that Americans just hate being around people who speak anything other than English. Every year I would make it my business to visit at least a couple of Warner companies that didn't see many people from the home office. Everyone was always surprised that I would rent a car and drive myself around (instead of being afraid of my own shadow and using limos or staying shut up in a hotel).

Anyway, when I went to Stockholm everyone spoke English and it was an exceedingly comfortable city for an American. Our Swedish label introduced me to their biggest local star, Andreas Johnson. I signed him and we released a record that was a smash all over Europe. It never really got off the ground in the U.S.
