On This Week yesterday, George played a clip of what Karl Rove would like you to believe. That Democrats want Osama Bin Laden to call his buddies in the US at anytime. I didn't know he had so many friends.

Rove: President Bush believes if Al Qaeda is calling somebody in America, it is in our national security interest to know who they're calling and why. Some important Democrats clearly disagree.

KERRY: You know, Osama bin Laden is going to die of kidney failure before he’s killed by Karl Rove and his crowd. And all he does is divide America over this issue and exploit it. And what he’s trying to pretend is somehow Democrats don’t want to eavesdrop appropriately to protect the country. That’s a lie.

We’re prepared to eavesdrop wherever and whenever necessary in order to make America safer. But we put a procedure in place to protect the constitutional rights of Americans. And what I believe, George, and I believe it deeply, is you can protect the United States of America without devoiding, without ignoring the Constitution of the country.

I thought John Kerry responded well to the obviously false Rove assertion. All Bush had to do was ask to change the law, but they would like America to believe differently.

Glenn says: "This statement is factually false, and Rove has to know that it's false. Nobody of any note – let alone "some important Democrats"-disagree that it's "in our national security interest to know" who Al Qaeda is calling and why. Nobody opposes eavesdropping on Al Qaeda, and Rove knows that. And yet, here he is, claiming, falsely, that the NSA scandal is based on a disagreement about whether the Government should be eavesdropping on Al Qaeda, even though no such disagreement exists...read on
