Bush: In 2042 the entire system would be exhausted and bankrupt.

This brought a reaction from the audience. I have heard mixed feelings about this outward expression during the SOTU address. Some felt it was inappropriate, while others remembered similar expressions during Bill Clinton's SOTU's. With the new data coming out by the CPO about Social Securities solvency untill 2052, I was surprised that President Bush used the same line he has been using to attack the issue he has wanted to change since 1978. Is it lying to falsley quote figures that he should know is not true? I heard one talking head on MSNBC defend Bush's use of the word "bankruptcy" by saying that if Social Security could only pay 73% of it's benefits in 2042, then it was really backrupt.

(update) Atrios has more on the treatment of Clinton by the repubs.
