On this date in 1918 the Armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. Since that time many Western countries and associated nations have changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day, with member states of the Commonwealth of Nations adopting Remembrance Day, and the United States government opting for Veterans Day. Around the world, The Last Post (above) is played today in memory of the end of that war, and to honor the veterans of all wars.
